Jellina Detmar and her family live in a charming little woodland cottage just outside the Frisian village of Kollum. The cottage is currently undergoing an intensive renovation, mainly under Jellina’s direction, with her husband’s help. Her hands-on mentality is plain to see on her social media, where she can regularly be found while painting or doing odd jobs. We recently surprised her with some beautiful Anthurium plants, which have become an essential part of the indoor-outdoor balance in Jellina’s woodland cottage. She recently shared the results on her Instagram account<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Indoor-Outdoor Balance<\/h2>\n

Industrial Vibes with a Twist<\/h3>\n

Jellina’s living style is best described as industrial with robust and rugged elements. There are plenty of earth tones and (oak) wood, combined with black, white and brown tones. Jellina thinks indoor plants are indispensable in the home since they provide an extra atmosphere and a great indoor-outdoor balance. The extension with a glass sliding wall is a striking addition to the cottage. Needless to say, these doors are always wide open during the summer months, but in autumn and winter, they stay closed to keep the cottage cosy and warm. The fabulous light streaming into the extension allows houseplants to thrive. In keeping with her interior decorating style, Jellina has planted several Anthuriums in a large, sturdy black container and given them a place on the robust wooden table. Jellina: “Because we live in such a green environment, it is nice to have the outdoors reflected indoors as well. A container filled with beautiful Anthurium plants will certainly give you that feeling. The red, yellow and orange colours match beautifully with autumn.”<\/p>\n

In addition to a large dining table, the extension also boasts a sitting area where the family can relax. Jellina has put several Anthuriums there as well. Jellina: “Next to the comfy sofa, I chose to put the plants in different pots and created a mix of terracotta, ceramic and bamboo baskets. I love natural colours and materials. They are tough and natural and that fits in beautifully with our style. In addition to my flowering Anthuriums, I also have a flowerless one. It is still a real eye-catcher because you can see the veins very clearly on its leaves. And by grouping the plants together, you really create a nice green atmosphere in the house.”<\/p>\n

Air-purifying Power<\/h3>\n

The extension boasts loads of Anthuriums. Not only do they create a cosy atmosphere, but they also make a positive contribution to the indoor climate. Especially now that the glass wall of the extension stays closed during the dark days, ventilation is minimal. Air-purifying plants such as Anthurium can help with that. They absorb air pollutants and break them down via their root balls. The plant provides fresh oxygen in return. The more plants, the stronger the effect. Given the number of Anthuriums at Jellina’s, the family should be all right!<\/p>\n
