With the right care, an Anthurium can produce new flowers throughout the year. It does this in a cycle of around three months of flowering, followed by a few months without flowers, and then another three months of flowering. Has your Anthurium not flowered for a while? There could be several reasons for this. So don’t throw it away just yet! In this article, we’ll look at some of the possible causes and what you can do to encourage your Anthurium to flower again.

Why isn’t my Anthurium flowering?

Not enough light

Light is one of the most important factors when it comes to flowering. If your Anthurium is in a dark spot, it will mainly produce new leaves and have less energy left for flowers. Place your plant somewhere bright with plenty of indirect daylight instead. Avoid strong, direct sunlight, as this can damage the leaves.

Not enough nutrients

An Anthurium needs sufficient nutrients to produce new flowers. During the growing season, you can therefore regularly give it Anthurium or houseplant fertiliser. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. In autumn and winter, the plant often grows more slowly and therefore needs less fertiliser.

Too much or too little water

The amount of water your Anthurium receives can also affect its flowering. An Anthurium likes slightly moist potting compost, but its roots should never be left sitting in water. Wait until the top layer of compost has dried out slightly before watering again. It’s also important to use a pot with drainage holes, so that excess water can drain away.

How can I get my Anthurium to flower again?

If your Anthurium hasn’t produced any new flowers for a while, try the following to encourage it to flower again:

• Move your houseplant to a brighter spot
• Water it no more than once a week
• If necessary, add a little extra fertiliser
