Who says houseplants always have to grow in potting soil? Influencer Laura from @thuisbylaura proves otherwise. In her cosy, colourful interior, a beautiful Anthurium takes centre stage – not in soil, but in a glass vase filled with water.

Anthurium in Water

How did you come up with the idea of putting an Anthurium in water?

“I’m always looking for ways to make my interior feel more lively. When I discovered that Anthuriums can also grow in water, I was immediately curious. It looks so fresh and modern, and you can see the roots — I think that’s beautiful. The technical term for this is hydroponics. Not every houseplant can grow in water, but the Anthurium is very suitable for it.”

What do you need to do for hydroponics?

“I took the Anthurium out of its nursery pot and carefully removed all the potting soil. Then I rinsed the roots thoroughly and placed the plant in a glass vase with a layer of water — just enough to cover the roots. It’s a simple task, and once it’s done, it’s a real eye-catcher. Secretly, I also found it a very relaxing job!”

Does it need special care?

“Not much, really! I add a splash of water every week to keep the level up, and I only change it when the water starts to get cloudy. The roots should always be visible — that’s what makes it so beautiful. I keep the plant in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight. Now and then, I add a drop of plant food.”

What do you like most about this plant in water?

“It feels a bit like art in a pot. The combination of glass, greenery and those colourful bracts just makes me happy.”

Finally, do you have any tips for beginners?

“Just give it a try! Start with a strong plant like the Anthurium. It’s a small effort that makes a big impact on your interior.”
